Chip designer AMD and Meta have spent 2026 binding their businesses ever more tightly, and the latest step adds a cheque to the engineering work. Early Helios racks have gone in at Meta and are under test before a broader deployment. EPYC chips sit behind the Muse assistant's dedicated computing environments, and AMD plans to put $1 billion into Meta's stock sale, the chipmaker said in a Tuesday release.
Helios is AMD's entry in the full-rack AI systems that hyperscalers now buy instead of individual chips, bundling its processors, accelerators and networking gear into a single unit. Getting those racks running inside one of the world's largest data center operators is the milestone the company has pointed to all year.
The announcement builds on a deal struck in February. Meta agreed to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs across multiple product generations, with shipments for the first gigawatt scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, and AMD issued Meta a performance-based warrant for up to 160 million of its shares.
The money flows toward a company asking outside investors to help cover an enormous infrastructure bill. Meta on Monday launched concurrent sales of common stock and mandatory convertible preferred shares, and said AMD, Nvidia and Broadcom had indicated non-binding interest in buying stock as cornerstone investors, according to Meta's offering announcement. Those three companies are among Meta's most important chip suppliers, so the arrangement channels suppliers' cash into their customer's balance sheet. For AMD, taking a stake in Meta reverses the February arrangement, under which Meta gained the right to own a slice of AMD.
The next test is scale. The two companies say their product roadmaps and engineering decisions are now aligned around Meta's workloads, with the collaboration informing the coming MI500 series GPUs, next-generation rack systems and a future EPYC processor code-named Verano, AMD said. AMD has cast its data center business as the engine of its growth plans, and hyperscale customers such as Meta are where that growth is showing up.
